What is constipation?

Obstipation involves a blockage of the intestines. A normal bowel passage frequency is considered anything between 3 times a day and once every 3 days. In constipation, the bowel passage frequency is less than once every 3 days. This is often accompanied by a swollen, painful abdomen combined with hard, dry stools.

What is important for a normal stool pattern?

In a normal stool pattern, intestinal peristalsis is important. This is under influence of the autonomic nervous system. Because of this, you have no conscious control over the peristaltic movements of the bowels yourself. A blockage can cause the innervation of the intestines to be less optimal. In addition, blood flow to the intestines is important for proper peristalsis. Blood flow can be reduced due to local mobility losses of the bowel, as well as mobility losses elsewhere in the abdominal cavity, thoracic cavity or diaphragm. These mobility losses can occur from scar tissue formation after surgery or after inflammation or infection, for example. A varied diet with enough fiber and adequate fluid intake is also important for a normal stool pattern.

How can the osteopath help with constipation symptoms?

The osteopath affects the innervation of the bowels through manual techniques on the skull, spine and pelvis. Also, the osteopath can improve blood flow to the intestines by eliminating mobility losses in the abdominal and thoracic cavities and by applying local techniques to the intestines. In addition, you will receive nutritional advice to work on your constipation yourself. Do you have any questions or would like to make an appointment? Please feel free to contact me.
